Path dedicated to the figure of the Virgin Mary, appealed as ‘Mother of Mercy’: from the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie (Teramo) to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta which houses the second Holy Door in history (Atri). Starting from the square in front of the sanctuary of the Madonna delle Grazie, we visit the basilica and its art treasures, in particular the miraculous Renaissance statue of the Madonna and Child. From there you go along the main street of Teramo, to reach the Duomo and, therefore, Piazzale San Francesco, where the bus takes you back. You reach the historic city of Atri, where you visit the historic center. You have lunch and then you enter the cathedral, with a passage at the Holy Door, to admire the majestic fresco cycle of the choir dedicated to the stories of the virgin. We then proceed with the visit to the crypt, obtained from a Roman cistern. On the way back we will proceed to a visit with tasting at a winery.
"The ways of the spirit"
Weekend to discover the places of spirit and art in northern Abruzzo organized in two route proposals
Path ON THE VIA MARIANA
Path CHEST OF ART AND SPIRITUALITY
Can a village contain art treasures and places of worship worthy of a city?
You will enter through the imposing Eastern Gate of the village of Campli to discover immediately after the singular double church of San Giovanni Battista. We will walk along streets lined with noble residences of various eras, decorated with typical arcades in stone and traditional terracotta decorations. We will reach the main square, where the Palazzo Pubblico and the former cathedral of Santa Maria in Platea have faced each other since the Middle Ages. Paintings and sculptures will tell us about a tradition that binds Campli to Rome, because the town of Abruzzo since 1776 has hosted a Scala Santa: a building that replicates, in small dimensions, the monumental structure present at San Giovanni in Laterano. We will therefore take the way back.
